Match Report: Oundle 6 – 0 Warwick

After last week’s successful road trip, Oundle returned to HQ for their only home game this month against familiar opposition, Warwick 3s. A team who Oundle have had mixed fortunes against last season, winning comfortably at home 5-1 before a narrow 2-1 loss at Warwick. Oundle had birthday boy Tim Pollard making his league debut for the club.
Due to the strong winds from storm Amy, the teams swapped ends before pushback with Captain Ben Edis leading the way after winning the toss. Starting at the opposite end in front of the capacity crowd, Oundle went on all out attack, and instantly called the opposite goalkeeper into action, forcing him into a double save.
The early exchanges were all Oundle who piled on the pressure, the Warwick keeper was called into action multiple times and proved to be equal to what Oundle had to throw at him, and was confidently exclaiming ‘Not Today!’ after every save, that was until Jimmy Moore who was still playing like prime Paul Scholes, found himself with a bit of time in the D, he fired home, the ball hitting the backboard with the customary thud and a roar from Jimmy that could be heard the length and breadth of the country.
Shortly after, Oundle broke after winning the ball from a Warwick short corner, a couple of quick passes and former Schoffel Model George Martin was through on goal, going onto his favoured reverse shot, he squeezed the ball past the onrushing Warwick keeper doubling Oundle’s lead.
After the 2nd goal Oundle appeared to take their foot of the gas a bit, which allowed Warwick into the game however the defensive lineup of Ian, Albi, Millan, Ben and Tim was excellent throughout with Warwick unable to get a sniff. The centre backs even felt brave enough to try and win the ball in the opposition D!
With Oundle starting the 2nd half much like the first, it seemed to be only a matter of time before Oundle scored again, which they did when Harvey got the ball high up the pitch and drove into the D. Harvey then passed to the left surprising everyone but Dan Phillips who fired home for his 1st goal of the season.
Oundle won multiple short corners throughout the half, Brenners winning a number of these going on mazy runs with Warwick unable to keep up. It was from one of these short corners that Oundle added their 4th, with Tristan hitting the post from a shot, the rebound was gleefully tapped home by none other than P.Wilson who scored from his usual range of a yard.
Peter Wilson doubled his tally just minutes later, winning the ball high up the pitch and driving into the Warwick D, P.Wilson unleashed a thunderous shot which gave the Warwick keeper no chance, the shot going in off the post.
Late on in the game Jimmy was still pulling the strings in midfield, looking up this time he saw John Pickstone floating unmarked in the Warwick D. The pass from Jimmy to John split the attack, midfield and defence of Warwick, leaving just the keeper to beat. Pickstone, the very definition of composure, did this nonchalantly, the ball flicked into the top corner of the goal.
With Oundle still hungry for more goals in the latter stages of the game, Ollie’s tenacity proved too much as he was given the only green card of the match and the first card for Oundle this season. Sharing some words of encouragement with the Warwick player as he ran off.
After the game, Ian was compared to some of the great fullbacks of old, Cafu, Phillip Lahm, John Brown.
A convincing 6-0 win for Oundle moves them up to 2nd in the table on goal difference. With Youngy describing the game as a ‘Pleasure to watch’ Oundle are back on the road again next week for a trip against familiar opposition, Atherstone Adders 2s.
